De vijf elementen worden beschouwd als dynamische processen, die gebeurtenissen beschrijven, die van nature voorkomen. De vijf elementen in Chinese term “Wu Xing” komt uit de traditionele Chinese filosofie. De Chinezen gebruiken deze als classificatie voor alle natuurlijke fenomenen. Dit systeem werd op veel fronten toegepast, zoals in Feng shui, astrologie, traditionele Chinese geneeskunde, muziek, vechtsporten en militaire beslissingen. Ook worden de elementen geassocieerd met emoties, smaken, kleuren, de organen, de windrichtingen en de seizoenen.
